Kriegsfreude offers a satirical look at martial arts in general and Historical European Martial Arts in particular. In this comic there are no sacred cows. Any- and everything martial arts related, can and will be poked, prodded, explored and made fun of.
Origin of “Kriegsfreude”
The name translates to “war joy” a term associated with the “spirit of 1914” (German: Augusterlebnis) . On August fourth 1914 all Germany's political parties unanimously voted for war.
Mostly city dwelling middle class nationalists believed that it was the end of decades of political infighting and the start of a unified, glorious Germany. This feeling was further enhanced by military successes in the first few weeks of the war.
While a lot of people, especially those living in rural areas where a lot more cautious, especially when they saw their loved ones depart for war, dissent was pushed aside by the enormous amount of pro-war literature. In August alone, millions of letters and war poems were submitted to and printed in newspapers.
This blitheful disregard for the consequences of war was one of the major seeds for WW2 and shows what an out of balance group emotion can lead too.
A similar blitheful ignorance is often seen in martial artists. Either beginners or advanced students and even "masters" that are clueless about the violent core of the circumstances that martial arts inherently deal with. This is especially dangerous in teachers and instructors who influence a group of people and may teach them self-destructive methods.
